Hi Folks,
I've been going through some old posts regarding training in other styles, and it seems to me, that Wado-Ryu is pretty underepresented here.
I'm thinking of checking out a couple of classes here, as part of my continuing Dojo-hop policy - but just wondered if anyone here has ever done it?

Talk to Steve (Bossman) or Ken (willowheart/ken harding) on the UK forum, those are 2 names over in your part of the world I can think of offhand.

Compare and contrast Wado Ryu with other forms of karate. This will form part of your final assessment. You have 10 minutes.

Right........ These are my opinions of how different styles compare. These have been formed by me talking to various people about their styles and my own rather limited practical experience.
A.....Wado-Ryu contains elements of Shotokan in its deep stances and is heavily influenced by Ju-Jutsu and grappling. It does not use the body-strengthening techniques favoured by many other styles, preferring to use tai-sabaki and footwork to evade attacks, and its Kata generally reflect that.
B.....Goju-Ryu prides itself on having an unbroken line of lineage from its founder, but has fractured into so many varieties that some of its practitioners claim it to be a Martial Art in its own right. It is characterised by its use of flowing kata and use of joint-locks and takedowns, and has its influences in Shotokan Karate and White-Crane Style Kung-Fu.
C....Shotokan Karate is widely considered a "sports" style of karate by a lot of people. It is characterised by its use of deep and long stances and rigid kata. Shotokan is very well-established and in some circles - when people say "karate" they mean "shotokan Karate" But is nonetheless an extremely effective style - which accounts for its popularity.
D.....Go-Kan-Ryu combines elements of Goju-Ryu and Shotokan in its style, most clearly in its kata and its reliance on basic - but effective techniques. It is considered to be the most "sports-orientated" style of Karate, and is wildely derided for its promotional and marketing efforts - but has produced some very good Martial-Artists, who otherwise would not have considered joining a MA organisation. It is very probably, one of the biggest MA clubs in the world.
Like I say, these are only my own personal opinions. flames, etc quite welcome........

What Shoto influences do you see in Goju?
My experience of Wado (with Steve Rowe/Bossman) was that it doesnt have deep stances.. rather higher more mobile stances that are rooted into the ground and are more stable that what ive previously learned.
Other than that I agree
