Hey what about a live chat add-on for the forum?

Maybe not until there are more members, but something to consider for the future.

Had indeed thought about that Mick, and there is an add on for this board which would do the job nicely!

Might enlist your help to test it out shortly so that should the need arise it would be ready smile.gif
Susan
great

more work for me......

Matt
not at all shue.....
Itll be a part of the forum, you just click a "chat" button and you're there....Ninjamicros and the Genome Collective have a similar feature if you want to check it out...

I'll mark next weekend as a date to see what can be done (busy week sorry smile.gif)
Matt
Invision want US$75 per year to use their chat software....US $100 if you want it integrated into the forum mad.gif If it came to that I'd rather shell out the extra and get VBulletin...

I'll look at some other alternatives, but am of course open to suggestions...

(IRC??)
Susan
i was going to suggest IRC

I saw a JIRC chat mod thingy on ibresource.com that may have potential. It seems to be some sort of IRC interface.

Matt, there's phpMyChat which you can install from your CP. Just add phpMyChat link to the forum header or footer once you've installed it.

:)

Matt
Hey didnt think of that!! Great idea.
Must explore the cpanel a bit more (is there any online documentation?)

Thanks Franki....
Franki
The docs can be found here: http://www.cpanel.net/docs/cp/index.html

Though it's for CP5 (currently is CP6) and for a different theme, the functions are pretty much the same. The developers of CP is pretty hopeless with releasing manuals, etc... The instruction for phpMyChat is exactly the same if you were to click on phpMyChat (under Scripts & Programs) within your CP.

Click on "Auto-Installer", and you'll find a brief description of all the scripts there.
Matt
Done - chat installed.
If anyone wants to play around with it check it out here. may be lonely for a while. GET YOUR CLASSMATES IN HERE!!!! If anyone feels inclined to chat drop us an email or ICQ on the button below this post sometime...Id like to test it out.

Franki is there any way this can be brought into the GKR directory? I notice installation instructions insisted it be installed in the root dir (but then it said that about this forum and that didnt stop you wink.gif )

Hello Matt, and thank you Franki.

That chat feature seems to work ok.
It is a little bit slow but it should do just fine. Especially since it is free, yes???

I was having a quick chat with Susan earlier this evening. It seemed to work ok with just the two of us.
Wouldn't mind seeing what it is like with more people in there though.
Could get confusing.
Franki
yes, every scripts in the CP are free :thumbwink:

May be Matt could arrange a "chatroom party" one day :hint:hint:

I'd be up for a chat party.

Just let me know when it is and I'll try to be there.

the chat looks like it will be pretty kool once more people start using it. Just an idea. A kids only chat on Aol has a couple of hosts. and the chat opens every day at a certain time. and everyone just talked had a good time. and the hosts did some games and stuff. I think that might be worth havin a look into for the kids.
But it could get a bit hard/complicated. so again it's just an idea.
Matt
Great idea Sam....
Tell you what......when there are sufficient numbers I will make sure there is a kids only chat room. Games etc could follow as a matter of course. Get your classmates in here smile.gif
Susan
yes... i think that will be a good idea too sam...

another thing we were thinking of is a forum just for kids on this board, BUT we just cant do it while we dont have enough young members. You'd be talking to yourself. SO...
...get some of your class mates in here.

It was mentioned that Matt was getting a bit frustrated that people aren't using the chat.

Is there a handy link to access it? And maybe set a time as a regular session? I think it's more likely to get people on if they know that at a certain time there are more likely to be people in there. Say 6 or 7pm on a Friday, Sat or Sun?

Matt
lol - I gather you saw some of my residual notes on there biggrin.gif
Its always been a trial thing, being a small forum I didnt think itd catch on real fast.

When V 1.2 of the board comes out very shortly I'll whack a link on there. no point just yet coz all hacks will be overwritten smile.gif

Great idea for a regular chat meet.....I'm in for one!
Sionnagh
Don't forget to post a note when v1.2 is out and it's done Matt

Matt, I missed this message altogether! sowwy!

That shouldn't be a problem, try "copying" (rather than moving) the chat folder into your gkr folder and then accessing it using "gkr.net.au/chat", you will need to update the configuration file to make sure that all references to any folder are updated. If it works, you can then delete the original folder.

Let me know if you need a hand.
