Hanshi Tino Ceberano will be doing a seminar in Perth on Saturday April 2 at the Melville Rec Centre. Cost $65.
Hanshi Tino Ceberano 8th Dan is the Chief Instructor of IGK (International Goju Karate). He studied under the legendary Gogen "the Cat" Yamaguchi and has a wealth of knowledge to share. Hanshi Tino's philosophy is one of "the person, not the style", which is oddly a rare thing amongst many Martial Artists.
Unfortunately I have a prior engagement that day but anyone who is interested in attending can PM me for the contact number.

sheesh Mick - I'da thunk you'd commit crimes to be there.....

Nah if I blew off my prior engagement to go I'd end up being a victim of crime - the wife would kill me.

Just err.... get lost on the way to the prior engagement, and re-appear with your wife several hours later!
It sounds awesome Mick! Can't you reason with her or something?

Or just tell her that she should let you go cause you're a black belt and can out-kata her?

Would you believe I`m in Sydney that weekend? I`d have loved to have gone! Oh, subtle irony.......
Are you going, Matt?

Daughter's birthday party... blame her for being born then
Ah well there's always the next time. It seems he gets over here quite often.
Which seems somehow ironic... reknowned Gojukai practitioner whose name is recognised by karate people all over the world comes to Perth on a regular basis... while the head of another style who is basically unknown outside his own club in Aus, NZ, UK and parts of the USA

comes to Perth ... less often?

On the subject of Hanshi Tino Ceberano, a little while back Blitz magazine interviewed Kancho Robert Sullivan. This is what he had to say about Tino Ceberano:
QUOTE
Blitz: What other instructors have influenced you?
Robert: Many! Hirokazu Kanazawa, Gon Yamamoto, Antonio Oliver, Morio Higgona, Tino Ceberano, and Masayuki Takasaka among many more I could mention. The key ones are Tino Ceberano and Masayuki Takasaka. Tino had a profound impression on me. John Morrison and I (both from NSW Go Ju Kai) were sent to Melbourne to help Tino who had just arrived from Hawaii. John and I participated in a demonstration with Tino at the newly built Monash University. The object was to help Tino to develop an initial base of students on which to launch his classes in Melbourne.
From that point on Tino and I developed a very close friendship. I'd Phone Tino as my inspiration probably 3-4 time per week from Sydney. I'd drive down 2-3 times a year and Tino would visit my family and I in Gosford. We keep in contact to this day and he is still an inspiration, an absolutely charismatic guy, and a true man of honour and integrity.

Hi Guys
Thanks to all of you who are supporting the Tino Ceberano seminar, the more interest we get the easier it is for me to get him here. Just a quick message to all of you who are going to be there, we will probably be doing some kumite so bring any mitts, pads and groin guards you might require. (we do groin kicks)
Also at the end of the seminar for those who are instructors or interested in being one, TIno Hanshi will be talking about an instructor accreditation that he has been working on with the government. This is a course that can be done where you will learn all the legalities, safety requirements, how to teach, bio-mechanics etc. Something that a lot of people and clubs desperately need.
Our view is to get enough people interested so that we can get Tino over here for a while to run the course for all who are interested, it is open to all styles and could possibly become law in the future that you have the accreditation to be able to teach public classes.

Hi Rocket...
That instructor course sounds like an amazing opportunity. Especially since he is offering it to all clubs...
It's definately a step in the right direction...

Wow - what an amazing experience.
These are due to occur every two months so we were informed and people of Perth, you would be doing yourselves a disservice if you didnt attend. Designed for all grades and all styles (even non karate) and focused on ways to improve your own training, I only wish I'd taped it so I could study it again. Just when you think youve discovered the depth of your own ignorance you step into a hole and get handed a shovel. If you thought you knew anything about karate trust me, you dont.
A bonus seminar on knife fighting - being how to defend yourself practically and in a realistic way was an unexpected bonus. Especially enjoyable for me as Mick got to be the demo guy and thrown around the hall for a change

His students were encouraged to train outside the school and learn new skills so all may benefit, a refreshing change.
Looking forward to next one. Many thanks to Hanshi and Ceberano Martial Arts for making us welcome.

Totally have to agree! As Matt found, our own training did stand us in good stead for the drills taught at the seminar.
For those people who have only ever been to GKR seminars, there is simply no comparison!

I agree wholeheartedly with this comment.
This was my first non-GKR seminar and it was wicked.
A bit of information overload though.
It made the karate I know seem so basic and lame in comaprison to what these guys know.

Give it time Mel. About 1/4 of the people were blackbelts and he was teaching everyone, so naturally there could be expected to be different levels catered for. The information overload tells you (and the rest of us) that there is more to learn. After all, if you didn't learn anything you wouldn't see the point in going again, right?

Your task is to remember the stuff you can't remember, so that maybe the rest of us can remember...

Definately an information overload....
If they do have these kinds of seminars every couple of months it would be worth going to them just to recap on the stuff we did at this one...
What made this seminar stand out from the others wasnt just the fact that he was catering for all karate styles but also allowed for other martial arts styles to participate shoould they feel like joining in next time...
I know some of what was brought up today made more sense to me due to my kung fu training and other aspects of the class helped to make some of my kung fu training more easily understood...
i would definately attend more of these...

Thanks for the comments guys and thankyou for supporting the event. I know what you mean by information overload, every seminar he conducts is like that. I have probably attended a dozen of his seminars now and he never fails to blow my mind.
When I was with gkr I trained with Bob Sullivan a couple of times, he just does'nt come close to Tino Hanshi as far as knowledge, skill and teaching ability goes. Just to listen to Hanshi talk blows me away hes like a real Mr Miyagi.
His eldest son is one of my best mates Shihan Paul Ceberano, he will be over in September to conduct gradings and seminars. The seminar will again be open to all styles it will be held on Sunday the 18th of Sept cost is usually 35 or $40. These seminars are also very good, he loves kumite drills, they are generally very casual and we often have a good laugh while learning.
Thanks again and I will see you soon, I'm trying to get down to Micks dojo one night soon.
ooss Rocket73
P.S. Hanshi Tino just called me and we are already organising the next seminar. Oh Yeah did anyone lose a red AKF approved sparring mitt, it was left behind, if so let me know and I will get it back to you as soon as I can.

Please inform the group here as soon as possible of any seminars open to all of us as i know for some, restraints for attending were gathering the funds at short notice or getting time off work at short notice...
Thank you again for the invite... It is MUCH appreciated....

Hi there!
I had dinner with Tino Hanshi last night, we have already started planning the next seminar. There is no date set as yet but we will be running it a little differently next time. There will be 2 seminars the first will be for 10th kyu to 5th kyu running for about 2 hours, where myself, Henry Taweel Sensei and Eddie Taweel Shihan will be assisting. Then straight after that there will be another seminar for 4th kyu and above, also running for 2 hours. This way the higher grades won't get bored doing the stuff that they already know and the lower grade won't get blown away with information overload.
As far as dates are concerned I would say it will be about 2 months away and the cost will be the same.
We also talked about the possibility of running a camp here as well. This would run for about four days and would also be open to all styles. If we did this we would try to get a kyoshi from queensland, a shihan from tassie, shihan Paul ceberano from melbourne as well as a couple of renshis that we know. If we can pull this one off it would be a huge event, as the knowledge that these guys have is awesome. Plus they are all really down to earth and great fun to train with. These are all students of Hanshi Ceberano and I know these guys would love to come.
Also dont forget that I have Shihan Paul Ceberano here in September, he wants to run a kumite seminar for juniors and seniors. It will be held on Sunday the 18th either at my Bicton dojo or at our South Perth dojo, I will keep you posted.
See ya later and thanks for the support.

Hi Everybody
Great news! I just received an email from Tino Ceberano Hanshi, he wants to come over in early to mid October. Henry Taweel Sensei and myself will be meeting on Monday to organize another day of seminars.
This time we will run two seminars, one for 10th to 5th kyu and another for 4th kyu and up. This will enable Hanshi to go over some more advanced stuff with the higher grades without spinning out the lower grades. There is also a possibility of us taking him down to Bunbury to run some seminars down there as well. The cost will be the same as last time and I will let you know of the time and location as soon as we finalize the arrangments. So spread the word guys, the more successful these events are the more often he will come over.

G'day guys
Today I had several phone conversations with Hanshi Tino Ceberano and am glad to say that we have confirmed a date for his upcoming seminar in Perth. He will be arriving on about the 17th of October and will be running seminars down Bunbury and Manjimup during the week then conducting seminars on the weekend of the 22nd and 23rd of October in Perth.
We havent yet confirmed exact times and locations but I'm 99% sure the Perth seminars will be held at our South Perth dojo on Saturday. This time we will be splitting it into two seminars, the first will be for 10th to 5th kyu and the second will be for 4thkyu and up. The price will be the usual $65 for the karate seminar or $200 if you want to do the karate seminar on saturday and a weapons seminar on Sunday, there will be only 10 spots available for the weapons seminar.
Also there will be a junior seminar on the Sunday which is $35 and is awesome for your junior students to go along too.

Another great day - Thanks Rocket.
Amazing to see the variety of other clubs attending. Fitted in nicely with the theme of professionalism and mutual sharing of knowledge without ego - he seems pretty big on that. I met some fantastic people and hope to have the opportunity to train with them again some day soon. For me this is what its all about!!

Hi Matt
It was another great seminar, he has so much knowledge, and all we did was basics. On Monday night at training we worked on upper block for about half an hour but it was still really interesting and fun. When he does advanced stuff he is awesome, you should see him move, if I can move like that when I am 64 I would be pretty happy.
It was good to see all the other clubs there and they are all top blokes and have a great attitude. We are already talking about having interclub visits and camps together. We are having another combined training with Eddie and Henry Taweel in a couple of weeks on a Wednesday night and you would be made very welcome if you attended Matt. They run an awesome class, I usually train with them in my holidays, Eddie was 14 times national kumite champion and has some awesome training drills.
We also have clubs in the South West who are interested in doing some camps and training etc
Thanks for the support mate, the more support we get for these the easier it is to get him here. I am now trying to convince him to move here, how good would that be, we could train with him a couple of times a week then. He seems open to the idea, but I dont think it will happen in the near future.
Gotta go now, going to train with him again today, yippeeee!
