Hello everyone
Last night at ju jitsu, sensei said that Sam and i are going to attempt our first grading next monday(july5th).We are very nervous as we watched some students attempt grading this week, and they all failed?and they have all been going longer than us.The good thing is that we have a clear idea(written sylabus,is that right) of what we have to do, ie
20 press ups
20 sit ups
20 squat thrusts
all one after the other then
Ukemiwaza(breakfalls) hands and toes back
front roll side left and right
Throws
osotogeri-rear leg sweep
ogoshi-major hip
then apply two throws to a self defence situation
punches
junzuki, gyakuzuki,urazuki
kicks
maegeri,mawashigeri,yokogeri
weapons
nunchuku forms 1 and 2
written thesis(names of basic throws etc)
We will let u know how we get on

sounds like you need a ton more strength and fitness for ju jitsu then karate! i dont think i could manage the first grading for ju jitzu lol

Actually not. The major factors in jujutsu techniques are balance, positioning and leverage.
And this grading format is IMO easier as you know exactly what they're looking at.

But isn't a GKR grading just as easy then? You know what they're looking for because it's basicall the same in every GKR grading. Good technique in moves, good standard for grade kata and all others before it, and able to last in sparring.

Mick is right in what he says, sam is knee high to a grasshopper, and he manages to throw people a lot taller and heavier. For a first grading i think the sylabus is pretty tough, but then i look at the standard of the students, and i know that its good that its tough, they will not be given a grade, they will have to earn it. not to sure if the kids will pass? but we will find out soon.

What a let down the grading was cancelled at the 11th hour, due to unforseen circumstances? and will be resheduled shortly?

still it buys us some more practise time,it feels a bit of an anti climax after having a great weekend competing at two GKR tournys. Will keep you posted of the resheduled date.

YO!
Sam here
well sensei finally took a grading last nite, 3 of us were up for our first grade,

I was up first, why do they always pick on the little guy first
Then a teenager called jack, then victoria,we all had to do the sylabus described before 1 at a time,at the end we were sent back to join the rest of the class
At the end of class it was announced, that my sister and i had passed our first grading :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :: :woohoo: :woohoo: :wo: :woohoo: ::

It was a really hard grading for a first belt, i cant see that we will ever get to b belt in this style, just the the start is a knightmare, 100 pressups, 100 situps,100 squat thrusts,
We have our first grade in jujitsu and kobudo

sorry im excited.
Jack didnt make the grade, but he gets another chance in a couple of weeks,we went through the grading with him after, i think victoria has a soft spot for him

they kinda sneaked off in a corner

lol.
Any way did i tell you, we are graded belts in jujitsu and kobudo

thats excellent...

Thank you mat, but really we do 5 styles within 3, ie GKR
Tang soo do and freestyle
Ju jitsu and kobudo
We are giving it some serious thought," again" about moving on from GKR as we feel that our ju jitsu sensei is maybe what we have been looking for ie sensei and mentor, he also teaches wado ryu, we have been asessed and can keep our gkr grade, but wont be graded until we learn the sylabus up to the next grade, which of course is very fair, its a very hard decision, we know our dad thinks we should leave, but we do love the gkr style and have so many friends all over the country, i know we can stay in touch but it wont be the same.martial arts wise i think maybe its right to move on, we dont know what to do, he he sam says we can just add wado ryu to what we do, but dad says it will be too much and we may get confused, plus its the financial side, apparently our ju jitsu sensei has good lineage?? dad will let us do whatever we want, but he is nearly always right about things, arhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. still dont know!

It all depends what you want. If you do karate for the social side and a bit of fun then stick with GKR. But if you want to keep learning, apart from the occasional new kata, you need to look elsewhere.

I was thinking that... I suppose it depends how impressive the Sand Gropers are...

Next time but, we should start planning (and saving money) 12 months in advance so more people have a chance to join the party.

Vicki and i spent this weekend away with the ju jitsu club at a holiday camp, for a bonding training fun weekend. We trained hard, and had competitions and generally had a good time, there were about 30 of us students there for the weekend.Vicki won the kata competition, and i graded to my 8th kyu yellow belt

.
We have got a bit confused with our gradings because i though this was my 7th kyu as it is my 3rd grading in ju jitsu, but no we start by grading to 10th kyu, does anybody know of any other style that starts by grading at 10th kyu, i thought that as soon as you joined a club you were a 10th kyu lol.
I suppose different clubs do things differently, i have asked a few people and they all say there first grading was for 9th kyu, just wondered what everyone else does?

Hi Sam-san
It depends on the club mate. Some start at 10th kyu however, I know several clubs styles that start at 5th kyu. It's all the same at the end of the day, most of them take about the same amount of time to grade to shodan - 3 years (training 2-3 times a week)

My TKD mob interview you first and discuss the club/style/etc etc...part of the interview is a brief lesson in basics and dojang ettiquette, after that they have a quick test to see if you remembered and award you 10th kyu...I guess its part enthusiasm builder and part marketing ploy and fair enough. Personally havent heard of any other 10th kyu gradings out here...
Susan
Apr 7 2005, 08:48 PM
The kung fu club i attend doesnt use number grades in levels like that...
there arent even ten levels to go through.
BUT you do start out as a "no grade" and after 8 classes you do a 'grading' to gain the first level. since your first grade is "gold" i guess you can say you start out as a white belt (but you have no belt) then the first is like you yellow tip grading...
there are only 8 levels including black so you grade 8 times all up...
Sionnagh
Apr 7 2005, 11:37 PM
I have heard of a few clubs that do that, ranging from awarding 10th kyu once you've learnt a few basic etiquette type things like when to bow and how to tie the belt through to making it a grading like all the others. And the associated costs range from nothing to charging on the same scale as other gradings. Like there's not already enough grade levels!
