have heard of a few clubs that do that, ranging from awarding 10th kyu once you've learnt a few basic etiquette type things like when to bow and how to tie the belt through to making it a grading like all the others. And the associated costs range from nothing to charging on the same scale as other gradings. Like there's not already enough grade levels!
Well i think the kids did a lot for there 10th kyu grading, and the fee was the same as any other grading.Thats what his club does, so we either like it or leave, i think the grading was a bit strong for a 10th kyu.Having said that it is far better to have earnt the grade than be given it, just a slight feeling of is it money orientated???.
Good question Sam prehaps we should ask sensei.

Well we attended class tonite, and i was called up to try for my grade again along with a man called Jack (who also failed last week). sensei let us try again because we were so close i assume.
Grading was as described for sam a few posts back, i was very nervous but was hoping the work sam and i did would pay off.
We went through the grading until we reached the throws where i was up first,my partner attacked me with a punch/strike i had to block, and counter strike then apply the throw without hesitation, and finaly finnish them off by applying a leg/arm lock or strike to the vital areas,The partner had to use various strikes, throughout my five different throws and i had to come up with different counters and locks etc for each throw.I was chuffed to bits when i had finaly done my last throw as i felt i did it much better than last week.
Jack then went through the same thing,
At the end of classs sensei anounced that i had indeed graded to my 8th kyu yellow belt.Sadly Jack never made the grade, but im sure he will soon.

I had the privellage of actually watching Sam attempt another Grading today, it goes without saying how imensley proud and chuffed to bits i am to see him grade imo an very very tough grading.
We roared when fighting a 6ft 15 year old Sam proceeded to turn the guy jump on his back, put on a half nelson and ragg the guy senseless, loved the gurgling sound coming from the guy, until sensei yelled yamae.
i have one very very tired little man tonight, at least i may get a night off.

One minute. I thought there were only two or three Nunchaku kate in ryukyu kobudo...... I assume your grade kata would be variants of these?
Yes and no, yes some of the kata are variiants of the three nunchaku ryukyu kata, i believe from what ive seen, it was a long time ago though. The kids sensei, has told the kids his sensei(10th dan) spent many years abroad living and training, America, japan ,Okinawa to name some, and the weapons kata in the sylabus are a combination of a mix of what he learnt in the different places, Some have been broken down into 2 or 3 kata(the early kata) to make it easier for newbies to learn(stepping stones) every weapon also has combinations to learn, learn some combinations then go on to the kata, more advanced combinations, nore advanced kata and so on.
For me, theres far to many kata, but hey its not my club and what do i know
