I seem to be pretty good at it now. But it did take a while to get the whole throw and then jump and twist right. As well as landing right.

Brings up a point.....
Here in the west we are told that its important to go right down as low as possible in the hooked stance/ reverse punch after the knee strike. I noticed people from other states tended not to do this. Whats the criteria in your region?

Yeah, we're told to go down as low as possible too. I absolutely hate that part of the kata. I never seem to get down low enough...

I was at the GKR Worldcup last year and noticed that the UK competitors barley bend at the knee. I have no problem gettting down low (at my age gravity does it for me

) it's getting back up thats the hard part

As far as i know, unless its all changed again? you are supposed to bend lowish,IMHO its no good going to low if you cant move after with the same fluid movement as before, whats this move for? what is the next move after? does it make sense to go so low?

Well straight after that sequence, where you've gone down low and punched while protecting your face, you then step back into a long stance and block, and then turn 180 and do the same thing. Getting that low just helps with the two low stances that come after it. <--- Apologies for the wording. Can't think of any technique names.

The first stance following the low punch is kokutsu dachi, but it's the older form of back stance rather than the back stance which is typically found in Shotokan kata.

Susan now knows what the jump is for

And I didn't even drop her on her head in the carpark. Although she did squeal and wriggle

It does illustrate however how things can be taught hands-on in a matter of seconds compared to trying to explain in writing and still perhaps not quite "getting" it.

Yep, actions do speak louder than words. And they hurt more too.

I remeber being crazily excited about trying it for the first time, after we'd watched the senseis going through it. Obviously they showed off the kata by doing the 'throw over ya shoulder' move constantly.
And that then lead into the entire class going through jumping Mae Geri and flying Yoko Geri. Aerial kicks are great

Empi really doesnt strike me as that great a kata.
Maybe I'm missing something but it all seems pretty simple and more a showcase of basic techniques.
Malice
Jul 20 2004, 09:35 AM
Yeh i dunno why its held in such high standards really, maybe its just the jump

, or maybe the balance of fluency and strength in the kata just look hard-to-the-core, OR just becoz my sensei is always on about it and gets the kids all excited!

(and me...

)
Sionnagh
Jul 20 2004, 10:59 AM
Must be the jump... I reckon if they changed all the kata to include a jump then there'd be no problems with getting the kids to do kata
