Hi Jonny,

I`d say the yellow belt grading would be the worse, because you don`t know what to expect........Having said that - I did my orange a couple of months ago and was still as nervous as hell!

Bling blong, bling blong! Hi.
GoJu freek
Hi all just realised i had not introduced myself.

Currently live in Canberra
Married 1 Daughter
34 Years ancient.

Have been pretending to study Martial Arts for years Started doing Bac Fu Do for 2-3 years in 1986 got to green sash, Probably equal to 4th Kyu.

Did boxing for 3 years on and off.

Started Okinawan Goju Ryu in 1997, reached 1st kyu in 1999 then Shodan Ho (provisional Black Belt) in 2000.

At same time trained in Judo to help ground work from 1998 to 2000, reached 3rd Kyu.

2001 started new job and stopped training. Yes possibly 6th months before doing 1st Dan, i still think about this.

2004 started training again tried Shotokan, kick boxing and Taekido(different?) then Decieded to return to old style.

Am Still 1st kyu but if you leave for over 1 year approx you have to wear a white belt untill Sensei feels you have reached you old ability, This can be from 1 month to 1 year. Im still wearing white belt.

Only had four Tournments.
One NAS event as green belt came 4th in Continous Open.
Goju Nationals Won Novice (10th-7th Kyu) Kumite, 2nd Kata
Goju Nationals Won Intermediate (6th - 4th Kyu), 2nd Kata
Goju Nationals Won Open Brown Belt (3rd-1st Kyu), 2nd Kata
Yes their is a pattern, not enough focus in kata!! but i like Kumite.
I think i prefer full contact with mitts and head gear, we can kick and punch to head but wear gear like boxers. Full contact with padding

Currently focusing on finally getting 1st Dan, this years 2005 nationals and possibly Worlds in Canada 2006 (held bi annually).

Hoping after worlds to open own Dojo in Jerrabomberra/ Queanbeyan if have recieved 1st Dan (never assume anything). Should almost have enough experience by then.

Cheers

YAAAAAAAAYYY! Another canberran!

I was giving up hope smile.gif

Assume you live in the Jerrabomberra area?
Matt
in the whatwhatwhaterra errea?? scratchy.gif

Jerrabomberra tongue.gif

Aboriginal word for err... something. Google wouldn't give up it's secrets.

It's a famous wetlands area, I'm sure freek would know more.
Apparently there are places you can hide and watch the birds.

Maybe you could do kata in the hidey holes, and jump out and scare all the endangered birds to death?
Brodius
Jerrabomberra. What a mouthful... sleep.gif

Bling blong, bling blong! wired.gif
GoJu freek
No idea what Jerrabomberra means.

For simplicity everyone calls it Jerra!
It does have something to do with wetlands but most of the Jerrabomberra wetlands are in ACT yet Jerrabomberra the suburb is in NSW.

I think Jerrabomberra should mean Suburb full of ex Canberrans who dont want to admit they live in Queanbeyan.

(Jerra is a suburb of Queanbeyan which is the twin city to Canberra but has always been seen as the poor cousin. If you ask no one will every say they live in Queanbeyan if they can use Jerra)

Hello everyone,

I joined the site a few days ago and have enjoyed reading some of the topics.

Name: Tony
Age: 43 years young
Lives / Trains : Melbourne, Australia in Region 6
Grade: Green Belt

I have been doing GKR for nearly 2 years after a 12 year rest from doing Tae Kwon Do ( Red Belt ) and dabbling in Unarmed Combat type training in the army.
I really enjoy the training and am getting right into it again, although I,m finding the Round Kick hard to master ( but never give up trying ).
Susan
welcome aboard tony...

hope you enjoy the place, please stick around smile.gif
Matt

LOL! Next thing we know, the hips will be starting their own anti kicking club tongue.gif

Hello Everyone

Thanks for the warm welcome messages, greatly appreciated.

In my last grading, when we got to do the Round kick , a black belt sensei stood right in front of me ( no pressure!! ) and I just managed to get through it. At the end of the kick, he smiled and walked away. I found out later my own sensei asked him to do this , as he knows I love doing the kick so much!.

I have been told by many other students it's all in the hips and the set up. Anyway, I love a challenge and am determined to crack it before I grade for blue belt, even if it takes all this year.

Cheers

Hi, I'm another from Canberra. I already know Goyle (see I'm finally posting! tongue.gif) I've been lurking on the forum for a while now.

I did GKR a few years ago, got to 3rd kyu back in 2001, and shortly thereafter stopped training for various reasons. Now I've been back since late last December and regret ever leaving. It's so annoying trying to train as 3rd kyu, but to have lost so many little details. sad.gif But also been good to have an extended break, because it makes me appreciate just how great karate is. smile.gif thumb.gif

Oh, and put me down for the anti-round-kick club too dunno.gif
Matt
Well ABOUT TIME is all I can say....
finally an official welcome.gif to the forums smile.gif
Goyle

Tom
Hi Folks, Matt has said the official Welcome, so it`s up to me to say the unofficial welcome.... And here it is....
HOWDY!! Have fun!

Cheers!
