I guess instructors ahould take note of fangs and buttercups comments. If you want to keep your students happy and have good retention you should take an interest in keeping in contact with them.
I totally agree with your comments Matt however I think they need to be put into perspective.
In GKR instructors are not paid for the time they put in. This means tha 99% of GKR senseis have some type of fulltime work. I know I did when I was a sensei.
This only leaves so many hours etc to call back students also there is little if any incentive to make thse calls.
You compare this to other clubs where the instructors are fulltime instructors and dont need to rely on another form of income. For them part of their paid job is to contact students. I also wouldnt be surprised if they didnt get a bonus for reducing the churn rate of students or maintaining class numbers.
I remember when Region 28(Perth WA) had a sensei of the month award. I also remeber the month I won the award. The reason given to me by the RM at the time was my commitment to students and my class numbers. Now at that time I was endevouring to call students who hadnt been to class after 2 weeks. What stopped me making the calls was a combination of the following.
1: Little or no thanks from the new RM of my efforts
2: The cost incoured in making the calls. (I know its not alot but it can add up, especially if the numbers students have left are mobile numbers)
3: No time to call. I was getting home from work around 7pm. I tried calling people then only to interupt their dinner. Tried to call later and got bitched at for calling to late.(and I'll be damned if I am giving up my weekends with my family to call students:)
I would have happily kept busting my ass making those calls if the new RM had only said something like "keep up the good work Dave". I think the moral of this story should be that RM's reading this board should provide more encouragement and be more supportive of there senseis.
