HI woot.gif

Was just wondering, not a really good post or question, but is there anyone else in this forum who are from the north east of england?
And if so which dojo do you study at.

I am only doiing this as I am new to this site, and was just trying to get to know some people.
I would still like to know people who dont live in the north east of england though smile.gif
Les

I attend a 'pay by the month' club and if we don't attend for two weeks straight, at the beginning of the third week we get an inspirational phone call calling us back in to training.

It goes along the lines of "Why haven't you been to training?" "Do you still enjoy it?" "Are you planning on returning to training?" "We will be focusing more on.....<<<insert something really interesting or fun>>>....in the next few weeks"

If your club doesn't do this it might be a good idea to start.

I know the first phone call I got brought me back after 4 weeks off.

BTW

I'm from Perth.

buttercup i'd love to know the clubs name, for no more reason my son and i cross train and am in perth aswell same deal as you pay by the month. i train 4 times a week going on 5 with them because they mix it up, and it seems there is so much to learn with them, they make it fun every class and make you feel more than a cash flow, after all i pay by the month so they already have my money.
when we joined my son got sick never went to a class for nearly 2 months so they delayed his membership without being asked or needing a medical certificate of proof, till he was well enought to start. i got hurt at grk and took 3 weeks of training i told them why i had an injury from gkr. after a week and a half they phoned up to make sure i was ok and how long i was off for, and said if it was going to be a while they would work something out for me. got to love there style and committment towards they students. and i'm only a yellow belt with them so it's not like i am a long term student.

Ok, I'll admit it DJ - I was very impressed with your improvement since my last lesson..I even used you as a 'guide' when doing shita tzuki, soto shuto uchi and uchi shuto uchi tongue.gif .. but come on admit your total defeat at my hands when tag sparring ph34r.gif

wow - thread drift...sounds like another forum I know biggrin.gif

I guess instructors ahould take note of fangs and buttercups comments. If you want to keep your students happy and have good retention you should take an interest in keeping in contact with them.

Les and DJ....cant wait to hear about when you guys spar for the first time biggrin.gif

Its always scary when brothers spar....but when they're both all growed up - eek!!

like i said before matt threads seem to take a life of there owne tongue.gif . and i had the wrong susan to, i'll put it down to age help.gif , but i have know susan since she was a white belt does that count for something?. she just didn't help me out with that kata like she said. your right i'm wrong susan but i'm use to being wrong, so i'm pretty thick skined now, well maybe just thick unsure.gif. i'd like to see the two brothers spar aswell it might make for an interesting night, not to mention the next night at the dinner table for them, that might be better to watch than the sparring smile.gif good luck guys and keep it clean lol

I totally agree with your comments Matt however I think they need to be put into perspective.

In GKR instructors are not paid for the time they put in. This means tha 99% of GKR senseis have some type of fulltime work. I know I did when I was a sensei.
This only leaves so many hours etc to call back students also there is little if any incentive to make thse calls.

You compare this to other clubs where the instructors are fulltime instructors and dont need to rely on another form of income. For them part of their paid job is to contact students. I also wouldnt be surprised if they didnt get a bonus for reducing the churn rate of students or maintaining class numbers.

I remember when Region 28(Perth WA) had a sensei of the month award. I also remeber the month I won the award. The reason given to me by the RM at the time was my commitment to students and my class numbers. Now at that time I was endevouring to call students who hadnt been to class after 2 weeks. What stopped me making the calls was a combination of the following.

1: Little or no thanks from the new RM of my efforts
2: The cost incoured in making the calls. (I know its not alot but it can add up, especially if the numbers students have left are mobile numbers)
3: No time to call. I was getting home from work around 7pm. I tried calling people then only to interupt their dinner. Tried to call later and got bitched at for calling to late.(and I'll be damned if I am giving up my weekends with my family to call students:)

I would have happily kept busting my ass making those calls if the new RM had only said something like "keep up the good work Dave". I think the moral of this story should be that RM's reading this board should provide more encouragement and be more supportive of there senseis.

fang/Matt

thankfully I do not live with him, so do not need to see his gloating mug. In reality at 18 he is larger and definitely much stronger than I am (though I'd say even though I've got 15 years on him I'm the fitter tongue.gif ) - I also know he's proven himself in real world situations where his aggressive and damnright arrogant and cocky attitude seems to keep his pretty face pretty and his opponents more broken wink.gif - not that I condone such behaviour, but since I'm far more easy going and mild-mannered I may not have the competitive spirit to be successful in real kumite, EXCEPT when sparring with DJ where I've made sure over the years I've kept the 'big brother' psychological upper edge
