Very interesting reading.

Within the first 5 second, I read "an ultra-violent sport" - what bull. mad.gif "Written by a muppet who doesn't understand or watch MMA" is my initial impression...

"MMA fighters are scary in a way that boxers and kickboxers aren’t. They are savage."
He's not hyping it at all then...? "Savage"?? Oh dear me...

QUOTE
"When I asked him where the best place to train might be, he said, “Probably Pat Miletich’s place in Iowa. He’s got some of the best fighters in the world there"
Can't argue with that.

QUOTE
UFC defends its record by saying that, after 14 years and 1,000 bouts, the most serious injury suffered by a fighter is a broken arm.
Can't argue there either.

QUOTE
Because bouts end in submissions, the sort of injuries sustained by knockouts in boxing, for example, are unlikely to occur.
Not all bouts end in submissions. It's MIXED martial arts, not BJJ; KO's are common place, but are generally [IMO] swifter than in boxing due to the lighter [4oz] gloves, so a KO will often not be preceeded by many more head shots. Submissions are an option, and account for their fair share of wins.

I must confess I'm a fan of MMA, and as such am sick and tired of hearing it refered to as "barbaric" and "savage". Using the term "cage fighting" doesn't help it IMO, as uninitiated people tend to believe it's a fight to the death. It's possibly better regulated in terms of refereeing than western boxing is.

So, on balance, fair play to the guy for stepping into the cage, but I though the article not a great advert for the sport.
