So who knows anything about KungFu then?

This is 1 local Kungfu class I have found here in Tassie.

http://www.southcom.com.au/~jbkoay/index.html

Knowing not much about Kungfu in general, I want some advise.. I have heard it is a really satisfying style.

I asked about it on a Kungfu forum that I googled and the dudes on there seem to be freaks, and I mean total freaks.

How do I know if a "real" kungfu club or just another mish-mash style, you know like GKR( lol.gif )

Hi Rusty...

Good to see someone else is willing to get out there and give a Kung Fu style a go. Just be aware it will take you a long time to get out of the snap habit of GKR and into the relaxed and flowing style of Kung Fu.

I checked out the website and must say I have not heard of the style, the school or the instructor (but I haven't heard of many so I'm probably no help there anyway).

My only advice is to go and check it out for yourself. The same as with the advice given in earlier threads about trying a new karate school. Ask to watch a class or two. If they say no then I'd be worried. Ask to try a class or two. And above all ask lots of questions. I couldn't seem to find any real history on the style. By that I mean it's true origins, or the head instructors teachers. It's lineage. I would definately ask about this. If a school is embarrassed or secretive about their history or lineage then I'd say they have problems. By now you would be aware of the 'mish mash' or badly constructed answers that could be thrown at you.

Also I would say to put the instructors name out there in the wider martial arts community. Generally, if he has a good name then he should be fairly well known by other instructors or martial arts equipment suppliers.

Good luck with your new adventure. Let us all know how you go with it.

OK... i've been doing a little bit of googling.

It seems Loong Choo is the name of the school and they practise Dragon style kung fu which is a legitimate style of kung fu with schools all around the world (according to Wikipedia)

No info on johnny koay though, other than him being on the research team putting together a "history of asian martial arts in australia" website with a short history of many different martial arts styles. Nothing On Dragon style though.

Hope that helps.
