Full Version: Fight, flight or freeze

Today while returning to my work plant something occurred to me.......

A mob of kangeroos gathered together in the middle of a dirt track. Suddenly my Volvo FM12 with roaring engine and massive dust cloud came hurtling down the dirt track towards them all. This is where we find out what type of kangeroo each of them is.

The smart kangeroos hop madly to the left or right, or to the left then to the right in a state of panic. This is the majority of the group.

The scared kangeroos freeze right where they are, doe eyed and stunned. Not knowing what to do. Not able to make a decision.

The stupid kangeroos stand their ground. Unaware of the force that is coming towards them. Yet pigheaded enough to think they can take it on.

The REALLY stupid stand safely to the side of the road looking on at what is about to happen, then as the beast comes closer they jump out in front ready to fight. Ready to attack. Believeing they are untouchable. Unbreakable. Gods... if you will.

This reminded me of humans. The three main reactions in an offensive/attack situation. fight, flight or freeze. All three are so instinctual that they even affect a kangeroo. Which one are you? Are you prepared enough to make the right choice in a situation where a force greater than yours is thrust upon you?

Prepare yourself. Don't be the scared kangeroos that freeze. You will be squashed. Just like the kangeroos.

BUT...........

Don't be a stuupid Kan Go Ryu

Admit it Sue, this is really just a chance to show off your truck smile.gif

Nah... already did that a few months back.

This is just my excuse for running over a roo...

I`d throw my hands up in horror and cry "You heartless creature!!!" except for the fact that I ate most of one last year......

Mmmm...Roadkill...... smile.gif

It does make me feel better knowing that i fed a few Eagles.

Seeing them the following day picking the insides out and as the very same truck that killed the roo hurtles back towards it the eagle flies (VERY SLOWLY) off with the entrails hanging out of it's beak and still attached to the roo. Always a good view.

But there are unfortunately many eagle deaths by trucks too. Because you can't expect a driver of a truck or road train to stop, walk back 500 metres, and drag the roo off the road, then walk back to their truck another 500 metres...... the eagles are always on the road aswell. And just like the footy team..... they're a stubborn bunch of bastards...... they'll sit on their roo in the middle of the road and stare the truck down. as you get closer they slowly take off IN THE SAME DIRECTION AS YOU!!!!!!

If you've seen an eagle fly (or glide) you'll understand how frustrating this is.

There is another reactive and instinctual reaction that most people classify as fight but isn't really, its called posturing.
Where you aren't fighting as such you are positioning yourself to prove that you are dominant without causing injury to others.

If you haven't already seen it i recommend seeing a 2 part doco that was on nat geo called "the truth about killing" was really cool and interesting to hear there conclusions to alot of things people would consider an automatic result.
Like if someone was pointing a gun at you, would you be able to kill them???? the true answer would shock most
