Summary:
The Do Not Call Register is being established by the Australian Government in response to increasing community concern about the growth in unsolicited telemarketing calls.

The Do Not Call Register is a database of telephone numbers. Generally, it will be against the law to make unsolicited telemarketing calls to a number listed on the Do Not Call Register. This is subject to some limited exemptions.

The Do Not Call Register is expected to be operating no later than May 2007. A new industry standard for telemarketing and research calls will start at the same time.

Individuals will be able to register their numbers either online or by telephone. Applications by post will also be accepted. Further details of how to register will be available in coming months.

Individuals will not have to pay to register their telephone numbers. Entering numbers onto the Do Not Call Register will be free.

ACMA is warning consumers to be wary of people offering to register their details on the national Do Not Call Register and charge them for the service. These individuals do not represent ACMA and they do not have any authority from ACMA to collect details and charge consumers for entry on the register.

Yes, we have a similar scheme here, although I still occasionly get calls about new phone contracts, mortgage lenders, conservatories etc ( If they can graft a conservatory on the side of my 2nd floor flat, they deserve every penny! )

I found that virtually all calls stopped when I refused calls from withheld numbers which only cost something like £1/mth extra. Unfortunately, my family from Germany couldn't get through either, so I had to take it back off. Now the cold callers are back with a vengance mad.gif

Ramona, There`s a free service you can join, which will put your number on a list that cold-callers can`t call - although it doesn`t stop them all of the time though. I`ll see if I can find you the link.

Try this. Works nearly all the time, but better than endless phone-spam smile.gif

I get five or six telemarketer calls each day.

It used to not bother me unless I was on holidays or home sick as I was at work when they called. But now since I have day time spare time some weeks it bothers the hell out of me. i just dont answer private numbers. If my family has a private number then they have to call me on my mobile don't they?

sounds like that register will be worth it.
