Full Version: What did you want to be when you were a kid?

I was having this discussion with a friend yesterday.., as I found out I had been accepted into graduate law at university this year. It is something I have always wanted to do, coming from a working class background I have always wanted to work in the legal profession at a grass roots level allowing people who wouldn't normally be able to access legal services to have access to quality professional services.

So looks like its back to school for me!

So tell me, as a kid what did you want to be when you grew up?
Tom
I never really knew what I wanted to be. Still dont really!
I suppose to find something that I like doing (and hopefully get paid lots of money along the way!)
Most of my jobs have either been one or the other! I did enjoy working in Vehicle Logistics and Engineering though, so I guess the plan is to get back into that.

I suppose the good thing about having no long-term career plan is that you never get disappointed about not being an astronaut smile.gif

As a kid I wanted to be a paleontologist. I could even spell it too.

Somehow though it didn't occur to me to study biological sciences at school and I ended up doing a degree in maths:-(

I couldnt decide whether I wanted to be a nun or a stripper - I blame the Sound of Music and Gipsy. Clearly I watched them too often in my formative years...

I was boring, in the fact i wanted to be a footballer, almost made it as well wink.gif

We asked the kids this very question quite a few years ago,Sam said he wanted to be a square or a dragon rolleyes.gif he was only 3 laugh.gif , nowdays he has much higher asperations, as he wants to be a forensic scientist ohmy.gif and a teacher of martial arts part time.

Rosie always wanted to be a "Dunno" tongue.gif nowdays she wants her own dojo and to teach for a living.

For about seven years as a kid, I wanted to be an author.

At the same time, I was obsessed with Ancient History, so for a while, I wanted to be an archaeologist.

For the first couple of years of high school, I wanted to be a Journalist..

in the couple of years leading up to uni I was very much undecided... am now heading into second year uni. I was originallly accepted into a double degree - Bachelor of Arts (History and Sociology)/Bachelor of Business (Public Relations), but have now swapped into the plain Bachelor of Business. smile.gif Am loving what I am doing. smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif

All I ever wanted to be was old enough to move out of home and away from my mother tongue.gif Mid high school a friend and I decided we wanted to be Iced Vo-vos when we grew up (don't ask). When I was 27 I decided I wanted to be a computer programmer (which I now am, among other things).

I was under the impression that Business studies was what people did when they have no idea what they want to do. wink.gif dunno.gif That it comes from the family pressure "go into business, it pays pretty well". Not sure exactly what that means. It's not as though we really need more accountants. tongue.gif

I think I wanted to be either an astronaut too, or a cowboy or a fireman (ok so I like playing with fire unsure.gif ). I think maybe if you get too fixated on what you want and then find out it's not what you hoped you end up miserable and stuck in a rut. The easy fix is to stop performing so that you get the sack and then have to change.*

I am going back to Murdoch, because that is where I studied last time.

This is a little daunting, I have been having little panic momnets all weekend wondering how I am going to combine full-time work, and part-time study with everything else and still remain relatively sane.

Screw the sanity. You don't need it anyway! biggrin.gif

I'm the same - wanted to be an archaeologist and dig up a dinosaur!

Then I got caught up in computer games and ended up doing maths at uni (because the cool computer guys were in the same building).

I wanted to be a writer since forever, but I also wanted to be a pony rider (I was seven, I didn't know they were cowboys!) and a firefighter and a librarian a linguist, archeaologist (is there any kid who doesn't want to be that at some stage?) zoologist, marine biologist and gods know what else smile.gif
