Full Version: A Visit to Headingley Karate

Matt
Had the pleasure of attending a class run by Mike Flanagan at Leeds recently.
Not only a great chance to meet someone in person for a change but also to train in their class.
After preliminaries (a coffee at the pub) we went to the hall to be met by some new students who were especially interested in the "no high kicks" part of the clubs policy, having seen much flashy stuff elsewhere. The rest of the students were, as I find at whatever club I visit, a fantastic and friendly welcoming bunch.

Class concentrated on Pinan Sandan and associated applications and although I didn't know the kata it was great to be on familiar ground when it came to breaking it down and practicing with a partner. Realistic, extraordinarily effective and sometimes quite painful (still got a ripper bruise there thanks Mike wink.gif ) but also quite easy to remember and not ridiculously flashy and complicated. Also great to see how effective they were even though your partner was about 6 foot 8!

Will never forget the lapel grab defence (the bruisy one).... wicked!! lol.gif

Class finished off where it started, at the pub.
Great class, great people. I've tarted myself around a lot of schools in a lot of places and Mikes is a standout.

Thanks very much for a great experience.

Like I said in the other thread Matt, the pleasure was mine. It was good to meet you both.

Let's hope our paths cross again at some point.

As for the lapel grab, I always enjoy trying that on someone new:-), but I only really go for it on yudansha. It sure does chafe! The bruise is always a whopper, but happily there's no associated injury.

Til the next time, whenever/wherever that may be.

Mike

P.S. The highlight of the evening for me was seeing the huge grin on your face as Carl took you down and choked you. Bulging eyes and a big smile don't usually go together!

Matt really did have no trouble remembering stuff either. I have a (VISIBLE!!!) bruise to prove it! Wish we had video footage though. I would have liked to have seen the being-choked-while-grinning tongue.gif
