hi,

i have been training with GKR for a year now, and hopefully will be going for my Green belt in Jan 07 blink.gif

My daughter who is 12 also goes training with GKR and again she is on her Orange belt but wont grade for at least another 6 months.

Take care
Tom
Hi ADI, How`s it going?
I didnt get to much above 5th kyu with GKR, but if you need any advice, we`d be happy to help.
I reckon your daughter may grade sooner than 6 months - if she shows aptitude and perserverence she`ll grade in four, maybe three.

Anyway, any questions, ideas etc...........

Tips for Green Belt. Saifa, be confident when performing it. You`ll be pushed fairly hard so do the best you can, and remember that just because you`ve already graded on Taikyodo Nidan + Shodan, don`t think that the instructors won`t be looking at it.
I got picked up on my basics more than I did for my kata or sparring.

Welcome ADI biggrin.gif

Sounds like you are really enjoying your training.

So where you from?
ADI
Thanx for the advise, my daughter only goes once per week, only just just going twice a week as she tend to do tournament training on a Sunday evening. And i try and go 2/3 times per week.

I will remember all that you have said regarding the katas for my next grading.

We are from Reading, Berkshire England.

Q...... i have been going through and reading alot about other types of karate and GKR, and everyone seems to be putting GKR down, and giving real bad reports especially about the sensi's and kancho sullivan, even though it's supposedly non contact my daughter and i both really enjoy it very much, i must admit Kathryn does want to do CONTACT Karate ohmy.gif

Can anyone give me any futher info regarding GKR

I am probably going to be over in the UK at some point next year, would love to arrange a catch up, or at least meet some of the UK members when I am there.

I will think of a more thought out plan once the details are arranged... plus I am only half way through my morning coffee so the brain hasn't fully woken up yet.

A belated welcome from me.

I try not to put gkr down in public.... really. You need to realise a lot of people who got their start there ended up with some bad experiences, and its up to them to tell you themselves. For what its worth I made lifelong friends from my time there and wouldnt have gotten started in karate without it. My gripe was the standard of training and being pushed to make more money for the club at the expense of the rest of my life - but from what I hear that situation has been improved under current new local management.

If daughter wants to try contact styles please please please watch a few classes first. I did a few Kyokushin classes having been curious about it for a long time and enjoyed it immensely. I dont know if Zen Do Kai made it to the UK but Ive heard mixed reports about that. If there's no regard for safety or injury steer well clear.

That said, I have often remarked that I have had worse injuries from non contact sparring than from contact sparring.

Congratulations ADI cool.gif

I remember green belt... the last of the easy gradings Up_to_something.gif cheekywink.gif

Perhaps you'd like to start a new topic about it and tell others about what you expected, what you had to do and how you felt about it all? It might be helpful for others who are approaching their grading or stimulate others to contribute who have just done their grading. smile.gif
