Just wondering how often you people wash your gi?
I usually wash it straight after training. But if I have training the next day, I'll wash the top but dry the pant

We always wash our gi after each training session as we have a few days before the next session and because our dojo has a polished floor and cleaned regularly you tend to get a polish stain in various spots on the gi. I think a second gi is on the cards come summer and with the increased training sessions. The sparring mits and foot protectors take a hammering which is causing a problem with cleaning its hard to get the staining out. At least thats what my wife said!!!!

Nonono you don't wash your mitts. When they get stinky you can wave them under the nose of your sparring partner. This causes their eyes to start watering so they can't see when you throw punches at 'em.

lol - anyone who's experienced that knows its not entirely a joke. - just dont try it on your RM

Maybe thats why we start so far apart in tournaments.....keep the mit stink a secret weapon.
Gotta agree that pants can last a class or two more than tops, although there are some students who seeem to wash only on a weekly basis

Though if you can't wash your stuff in between classes cos it won't dry in time for the next, at least hang it up to air a little. Much better than leaving everything rolled up and left in a bag for next time.

Mick

Ok, an answer from a female - chuck your mits and pads in the washing machine with your gi every time you wear them.
And if you need them the next day chuck them in the dryer. Unless of course you don't work very hard at class and don't smell

I always avoid dryer especially for the gis, coz I think mine has shrunk enuff.
I guess I should change the question to 'Who stinks here?'

[hides behind lounge like a wuss]
it's alright for some people to be able to wash their gi after EVERY class
others of us live with our sisters and only get to use the washing machine once a week out of pure fear of getting their head completely bitten off by a PMS driven maniac who has to put a load of washing on every night at the precise time they want to use it, which just happens to be the ONLY time they are available TO use it.
and so are FORCED to wear stinky, stained gi's or revert to using the crappy old cotton ones that are two sizes too big and make you look like a big fat rediculous marsh mallow...
*not talking about anyone in particular here*

not washing your gi for a WHOLE WEEK?
that's just disgusting.
geez, theres some feral people out there.
my mum is so fenatical about keeping my gi clean, fresh, ironed and hung up.
she says a neat gi shows you have passion for your karate.
i suppose my mum would make a great karate student then

I read the history of martial arts which is the other way round from your mum's thought. That time people trained martial arts with gi never washed, the dirtier the gi showed how hard you have trained. (showing the frequency of your trainings, remember that time was very simple, so thought like 'I can just put the gi in the mud, see... it's dirtier that yours now' wasn't really applicable much

)
It applied to the belt as well, which is why black belt is considered the highest belt, instead of white, coz in the past they never wash their belt and their belt got darker and darker.
It's more like a symbol really
Sionnagh
Aug 14 2003, 04:07 PM
Where'd you read that?
You should wash your gi just like any other clothing. Your belt too if it needs it.
<waits for the gasps of horror>
Haven't you heard the rule that your gi is not allowed to be dirtier than your instructor's?

So it's true then

Because instructors are supposed to have more experiences than the students, hence the dirtier gi

Not meaning any offence to sensei but I don't think anyones gi is going to get much dirtier than his old one.
My Mum is constantly saying "put your gi out it's dirty and smelly".
I do four training sessions a week so it isn't always possible to wash them after every lesson. So I would have to say Wash your gi as often as you wear it if that's possible. If not well what can you do?
Sionnagh
Aug 17 2003, 03:18 PM
If you train that often you probably need more than one gi

Just been reading though the pages and not a lot was really mentioned about the mitts and pads- is it ok to wash them or are they terrible to dry.
My gi gets washed after nearly every class and ironed and hung up ready for next class. My belt on the other hand only gets soaked when i get them before i need that particular colour, never washed when worn. :thumbwink:

Hi soniasonia
Washing of mitts and pads has been mentioned a few times

At some point I am sure you will come across someone who when they open their bag with their karate stuff has a stench emanating from it.
If you're really unlucky at some point you might even get to spar said person, and with any fortune you'll manage not to pass out from the stink of their mitts and pads.
Wash them, they're no harder to dry than a gi. And in between it can be a good idea to just take them out of the bag and let them air - especially if you have done some sparring and they have gotten damp from sweat.

I wash my mitts and pads in the washing machine with my gi and peg them up somewhere to dry or if running out of time put them in the dryer. Your gi will end up a couple (at least) of inches shorter if you put it in the dryer too often though so be careful if you like a long gi. And the mitts and pads aren't too keen on the dryer too often either as the elastic gives a bit from the heat. (Been doing that to mine for over 4 years and they're still going strong) Besides it's not as though they cost a fortune so go and buy some new ones if they fall apart. Beats stinking anyway!

I justchuck the Mitts and pads in the wash and then put them in the dryer. It works for me.
And yes Sionnagh i hav 2 gis but they are usually hanging up on the floor of my room.

I often have classes 2 nights in a row and also do my 'team kata girls' training at one of our houses in my gi pants as I find it helps us focus. (Strange but true!) So with most nights being karate orientated, I wash my gi jacket every second and often my gi pants every night. Mits and pads only get washed when I notice people passing out next to my bag. This is almost a real situation. I have had comments! (Most are too rude to mention here though.) Hehehe.
