I was just reading about the NAS tournaments. These look interesting, anyone been in one.
How does it go sparring against different styles? I notice the verteran class (which I'm in) seems to be an open category, so I'd be better going in novice where I wouldn't be sparring black belts.
Any thoughts?
We went in one GKR tournament so far and really enjoyed it.

Hi Caz.
NAS usually has Novice, Intermediate and Advanced divisions. Depending on number of entrants its usually yellow to green belt, blue to black belt, or open.
NAS is similar to GKR in that it has kata (called "Forms") and points sparring, but also has continuous sparring. Continuous sparring is my favourite and I really wish GKR would add it to their tournaments. Its like the free sparring we do in class, but both fighters are assessed on "ring domination" and who is the superior sparrer in a two minute fight. I believe its a far better test of who's the better sparrer than points sparring, but then thats just my opinion. wink.gif

Oh - also, GKR frowns upon you entering NAS unless you are a member of the "state team". You'd need to see your instructor about trying out for that

I looked at the results for NSW, and I found there is one junior GKR student who won 1st place in weapons division.... did I say weapon??? ohmy.gif

It is somewhat strange that we practice continuous sparring in class but dont compete that way. Some class type sparring in tournaments would really be good to see.

From what I hearc, the NAS team currently needs open novice people, because most of the people in the team are blue above, many are brown and black.

Thanks for the info, sounds like fun. I think I better wait until after the hockey season though - I'm juggling a few too many commitments right now!
"Weapons" sounds interesting - are hockey sticks allowed wink.gif

I'm not sure about going the for the "state" team - probably involves going to many more training sessions?

tongue.gif I'm already in it, someone approached me straight after my kata tourney (but yeah, I'd been wondering how to get in it before). Got bruises and wounds everytime and almost fainted coz of overheated and dehydrated unsure.gif . Can't complain about the 200 push-ups either. :thumbwink: Let see how long I can last in the team biggrin.gif

For adult, there are currently 1 yellow belt lady, around 4 oranges (like fruits), 1 green, 2 reds (I think), and the rest brown and above. Total trainees are 52 at the moment. That's why they require some adults from lower belts.

Those brownies really dominate the team, so if you want to test your skill, here you can go up against brownies and blackies. You don't practice your basic anymore there, you give a shot on what you've learnt so far. Some of them are so tense that when they kick or punch, they really mean it sad.gif

So that's just a glimpse on GKR NAS stats that I noticed so far.
Caz456, if you're really interested, do join the team, you don't have to commit if you don't enjoy it, although it's the basic requirement. But I'm sure you will
Rebecca
I thought it was supposed to be non contact?
deano
It is non contact Rebecca, just some people have a different concept of non contact to others.
