Now i am more led towards the Goju style than Shotokan style and id probably say seunchin was the better of the ones i know of (1st-hungetsu) due to the wavey motion and the ability to put your own spin on it in many ways.

But everyone has a favorite let me know yours

Right now I am liking Gekisai Dai Ni

Tensho, although I saw an interesting interpretation at a kyokushin class last night. After being used to a quite 'flowy' version this one was very sharp and stoccato.

I go through phases, sometimes I will like seeinchin, sometimes I will like sanseru and sometimes I will like sanchin, and sometimes I really enjoy basic Taikyoku katas. I think I just love kata, it is all good.

I like Nijushiho.

I like Nijushiho too. Only touched on it briefly at Coastal Shotokan, but yeah, I like it also smile.gif

I like Senseru, Empi is on my list of favorites, if only I could master that jump.

Well at the moment I'm with Will on the Sanseru part...

I've always liked Sanseru, the slow under tension parts followed by the short sharp movements, breaks in between moves and the complete focus on breathing... i find i tend to get 'lost' in the moment of sanseru.

Saw a Go jyu version of sanseru on the weekend, it might have been the gentleman performing it but wow.... I really liked it...

***Sanseru has also earned me a couple of gold medals in the GKR state tournaments so that kind of helps one to like the kata lol.gif

I'm a 3rd Kyu in GKR and the kata up to 3rd Kyu are the only ones I have practised solidly for a length of time.

I like SEIUCNHIN because:
- It's excellent use of stances to maximise the effectiveness of each move.
- It has a blend of effectiveness and style, which makes me feel good when I perform it.
- I like the timing taught by my instructors
- The techniques lend themselves easily to effective bunkai, which looks very similar to theformalised moves of the actual kata.

Obveisly i haven't done enough yet to say what high kata (like jion etc) is my favourite, but heian nidan is my favourite kata so far, hence also its my favourite colour, i just loved the way that from Zenkutsu Dachi to Zentuksu- Dachi Right Uchi Uke i just totally love that move, its soo cool, very effective. biggrin.gif

Another kata that is now close to my heart is heian shodan and i took part in a kata competion in march 2004 and i just simply flew across the floor and won a silver medal ie 2nd place, now it hangs up it my living room pride of place for everyone to see smile.gif

Some (heian's too) kata's i've noticed feature moves that high kata's have, take jion for example has some of the moves in there us what heian yondan has and very gingerly/ carefully we approach Kanku Dai with its Morote Hiji Tate Fuse and Nidan Tobi- Geri and shout kiai too and Empi gosh! well after Kiba-Dachi Morote Koko-Gamae, and then jump turn 360 degrees in the air and shout kiai aswell. ohmy.gif amazing! woow! cool.gif

Amazingly still my club's master (my sensei big boss!) Shihan Akio Minakami yearly comes all they way from hawaii usa to show us new kata's that he's created and teaches it to who ever what's to learn them, now wonder its feels my head is mentally expanding with all the moves/ things that i have to remember, its a good job coffee is available to help keep things together!!!
