Hi,
I've been reading some of this site and just wanted to say it is pretty good! My son and I took up karate 6 months ago and we are both loving it.
I only started because I found out the "kids" karate class I was looking for was actually all ages, so I thought "why not". Now I'm totally addicted!
I really like kata and kumite is a great challenge for me - it's not coming naturally!
We went in our first tournament recently and I got a silver medal in kata - awesome! My son went in kata and kumite. We had to practise kata everynight at home because he hadn't learnt it in class (he's only 7). I was so proud (and so was he) that he got all the moves right on the day.
We both did 1st kata, next time it will be 2nd

See you all,

hi caz
welcome to the forum...

congrats on the tournament medal...
excellent job...
and well done to your son for getting his kata right... thats a big thing for a child of his age. smile.gif

where do you train caz? region and dojo?

Your son hadn't learnt kata in class? I guess at your regular dojo the kids don't get taught kata along with the adults which is OK since they don't need kata until they go for green belt. Just that I have found it is easier to start teaching kata from the beginning which gives them more time to learn it before they need it for grading.

Plus it's handy if they want to go in tournaments wink.gif

Hi,
yes we do learn kata in class, but it just takes a bit more practise for 7 year olds I think. If it wasn't for practise at home he didn't know it.
It's a matter of building skills of concentration in class I think
