Breaking down Barriers(disabled martial arts seminar)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi all

Sam and i help out at a disabled martial arts event, which encourages disabled children and adults to try the arts.

Its a fantastic event and a very worthwhile cause, as well as helping out again at this years event(in nov) we are trying to help raise finances towards a very special 10 year anniversary of this event.

We have been busy over the last few months cajoling from our martial arts friends to donate what ever they can.

We have at this moment in time 2 sets of Iain Abernethys(5th dan wado ryu and much published author). karate grappling methods two dvds and a book per set, which iain has kindly donated for us to sell on ebay to raise funds for this worthwhile cause. which we have placed on e bay, if anyone is interested please take a look and bid genorously.

Iain Donated these, because they encompass all styles, the dvds and book are all signed by Iain and are new.

In our opinion having attended many of Iains seminars, and having purchased most of his dvds and books, these dvds and book would be a welcome, helpful and eye opening addition to anyones library.

Quotes from communication with Nigel last night, and a summarised list of other stuff the Waters kids have arranged to raise money for a seminar to get MA more available to everyone:

QUOTE
Trying to raise funds for this disabled event has been a bloody nightmare, its really hard to get anything from anyone nowdays, I am struggling to keep up with the kids e mails to people and what we have coming in.

So far we've had 5 sets of what you won donated by Iain Abernethy, who doesn't normally do this kinda thing? but as it was Sam and Vicki, he donated them. One left to sell.

And an edited list of *SOME* of the stuff the kids have organised so far:
  • our gkr region and the one closest do a seminar to raise money - just a possibility for now
  • our rm asked me to source a hall and write flyers and print them out so he could dish them out to the students 2,ooo of them
  • They have coming some dvds from Russel Stutley, havnt got a clue how many? be a nice suprise.
  • Shihan Chris Rowen has been in touch, and is going to donate some merchandise for the kids to sell
  • Shihan Gavin Mulholland(they have trained with him a few times) and asked him to donate an hours private lesson to be auctioned on the goju forums, to which he said yes, so late sun night i was writing that one up to put on the forums mon morning, lol bidding is up to £60 at the moment.
  • Nathan johnson(author of barefoot zen and many others) has a new book ... and may donate some copies
QUOTE
...as many that have donated twice as many have said no.
I think its been a good education for the kids as they have had to work really hard to get what they have.
...
I dont think you will find anything over there, re the disabled seminar as we have a young lady in a wheelchair coming over from Aus Adelaide i think to take part, and a few from the USA, I believe.

I am so stoked to have won the DVD's and book, and very proud to have had a small part in all of this. The kids have worked their butts off getting fundraising organised and what are the rest of you doing to contribute here?! Do something NOW!
Matt
Yes mum.
If the other sets still available I'll buy it...
Nooms
Good boy. *pats Matt on head and lets him out of the chokey*
Now....
WHAT ABOUT THE REST OF YOU?!
Mitten
Uni student.
Nooms
Is that some kind of excuse?
Get your dojoj together and raise some money and send it over there - I'm sure the wheel-chair bound girl from Adelaide who is TRAVELLING TO THE UK just to BE in this seminar would love some help with funding for it....

Matt

Yes there is one set left, if you are serious?, selling it privatley is even better as i dont have to pay any fees.

Nooms

Thats so nice of you to put that up on the forums, thank you.
I have to say im very proud of my two, because they wanted every penny to go to this cause, they have been washing cars on a saturday morning, to pay the post on each item they send out.I tell you its been very cold here as well, funny thing is my car is filthy. sad.gif

To all

The GKR fund raising thing is still early doors, but we do have it set up, just incase!!! ,just waiting for shihans approval, this time if he says yes we are keeping it small, so shihan has time to sort out details, and maybe make this a regular once a year event for different charities, so please dont go pester your rm for now to do the same, as we have no confirmation yet.Im sure shihan will post something suitable in the shimbun when and if he and Kancho agree to this, as im sure we are not the first to ask if this is possible.
Thanks

I know the disabled event in 2004, that the kids and i helped out with, really got to us all, but even i am shocked as to the response from my two, and the effort they put in.Someone said on another forum they hope the kids put as much effort into their school work as they do this fund raising, i was chuffed to inform him they are both waaaaay ahead of the game in there respectful years.

But hey dont be fooled, they are both little buggers when they want to be Up_to_something.gif take after mrs tmw i think in that area wink.gif .

Are any of you guys interested in any of the other goodies that may be sent our way for this event? if so with matts kind permission, i will post more on here as we get it.

There will be a write up of the event on the kids new website(dont ask lol) and shihan has asked us to submit an article to shimbun about the event. so you can see where your money went.
I have to be honest, im always cynical when it comes to collecting or giving money for events such as these, as probably like some of you, im not 100% per cent that the money goes to those its intended for. However in this instance im 99%sure having seen and taken part and helped in the background this one is kosher.

Synopsis
‘The Great Karate Myth’ is simultaneously a controversial exposé, and an instructional manual. It constructively challenges virtually everything the seasoned Karate enthusiast and novice alike may believe about the art of Karate, its origins and its original purpose.

If you already practice any of the mainstream Karate styles, (Shotokan, Goju Ryu, Wado Ryu, Uechi Ryu, etc.) after reading this book, you will never view Karate in the same way again! And even if you do not practice Karate, you will find this book to be a fascinating and comprehensive guide to the reality behind the myth that has become Karate.

Essential (key) Karate kata, (traditional basic solo training routines) practiced the World over and long assumed to be methods of unarmed self defence, are now proven to be either weapons techniques, performed without the weapons, or grappling techniques, derived from ancient (Ming dynasty) Chinese sources!

The current dissatisfaction with unarmed interpretation of these kata, experienced by many disgruntled Karate enthusiasts and modern reformers alike, can now be justified, as ‘The Great Karate Myth’ is at last unravelled!

The bedrock kata of the Worlds major Karate styles are fully presented within, either in their original forms, or properly formatted, with fully restored applications, unavailable elsewhere!

Kata is at the heart of true Karate, and a proper understanding of how they are applied is vital for complete mastery of this much misunderstood art. Shrouded in mystery and confusion, remarkably, the proper applications to these, the fundamental and arguably the most important kata, have not seen the light of day for many generations.

NATHAN J. JOHNSON holds a sixth degree black belt in Ko-do Ryu Karate, and a fourth degree black sash in traditional Chinese Kung Fu. He is also a Martial Arts historian and researcher, and the author of ten published books, including: Zen Shaolin Karate (Tokyo: Tuttle 1994) and Barefoot Zen (York Beach, Maine: Weiser 2000).

NEW, NEW, NEW, NEW,NEW, NEW,NEW,NEW,NEW,MEW,NEW,NEW,NEW

Just in

Goran Powell

"Waking Dragons"

I looked at the huge line of fighters still to come.It coiled around three sides of the mat like some great white dragon waiting to devour me, and suddenly the task ahead seemed impossible.

The thirty man kumite is one of karate toughest tests, reserved for senior black belts with years of experience. One person fights a line up of thirty fighters, one after the other, full contact, moving up the grades and facing the strongest, most dangerous fighters last.

This is a compelling and inspiring account of the thirty man Kumite and the lifetime of martial arts that led to it, charting the developement of mind, body and spirit over many years and offering a rare insight into the true purpose of the martial arts.

This wonderful book falls into that rare catergory of books that leave you inspired and wanting more.... this is about much more than match-fighting thirty fresh opponents, its about facing the inner opponent, about looking into the bely of fear itself.
Geoff Thompson

Many many thanks to Goran for donating a couple of signed copies of the book for us to auction for the disabled martial arts seminar.

If anyones interested in bidding for this book from us, could you email my dad on thatmanwaters@aol .com and place your bid, we will get back to you as soon as possible with an answer.

Dont forget we have lots of stuff still available on the pages above, common dig deep, get yourself a bargin and help someone out at the the same time.

I agree!
I`ve bought a signed copy of "The Great Karate Myth" by Nathan J. Johnson, and not only is it a thumping great 200-odd pages long, it also comes with it`s own DVD,
So I get a whole new look on karate, and I get to help others at the same time!

Time to put your hands in your pockets folks.... It really is worth it.

Hello

Vicki and i want to thank Mat for letting us post about the disabled seminar that we help with, and most of all everyone who bought something off us, and even those that looked but couldnt find something suitable for them, thank you all for your help.

We had set a target to raise around a £1000, to help with this event, unfortunatly we have been let down by many people who said they would do x and in the end did nothing and im sorry to say that includes GKR, which is very very disapointing and i think is a very poor reflection on those who let us and the disabled seminar down.

However despite this, we are pleased to say that this morning, we sent a cheq to the organiser of the event Mr Terry Taylor for £520, also we have a few bits left and we hope to add another £100 to this total by the time the event takes place on the 16th of november.

Vicki and i will be doing an article about the event, with piccys, which we had been asked to send for shimbum, but will now post somewhere else, or maybe on here with mats permission.

Thank you all so much for your help, and if anyones interested in the last couple of videos dvd please pm us.

Video, = BAR body alarm reaction
=Balance points
Both these video are new and were donated by their maker Russel stutely they retail at £35 each we are looking for £10 each plus p+p

Dvd Nunchaku dvd by Craig phillips, craig has a few dvds out and these in our opinion are the best on the market, and believe me we must have a hundred instructional dvds, again this is new and donated by craig, these retail at £25 and we would love £10 plus p+p

For anyone local we also have brand new a set of Hozelock garden lights, retail for the set over £100 we would love around the £50 mark.

Once again thank you all so much
Sam ,Vicki, Dad

Well done on raising the money! Excellent work!!
Matt
Its been a pleasure to try and help you guys.
This isn't my forum.....it's everyones, and this is exactly what it's for - spreading knowledge, information, friendship and goodwill. I've never seen anyone do this anywhere like you have. I'm disappointed you were let down, a broken promise can leave a nasty taste in ones mouth. Regardless be extremely proud of what you have accomplished. In this day of donation desensitizing I find it so easy to ignore fund raisers for important events such as this - thanks for reminding me I can easily afford a dollar or two here and there to try and make a difference.

Would be delighted if you would post a copy of your report on the seminar here. I'm sure those of us who have followed your efforts in getting this happening would be very interested in how it went smile.gif

Three cheers for the Waters family!!
Tom
I agree. I've helped whenever I could, and buying "The Great Karate Myth" and "Waking Dragons" off you, helped alot with my training and view of martial-arts in general so, and for that I must thank you.
Don`t be too hard on GKR. They are a business and after all, are run as one. But maybe more could have been done by certain people - but it`s not my place to say. But, tell us how things go. There is a whole world of martial-arts out there that a good preportion of us dont know about.

Tom the kids and i have been very patient, and nothing but polite to GKR with reference to this event, but imo they deserve none of it, and they should be ashamed of themselves, i will leave it there. tongue.gif

I stand corrected Nigel. It`s a pity they didn`t do more to help.

Thanks for that Nigel. I can understand how you and the kids must feel now. Probably not a good idea to delve too deeply into this here.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr lol.gif The event is every two years Tom, it is a special one this year as its the tenth anniversary, which is why we tried to help with raising some funds this year as well as helping out on the day.We probably will do a bit of fund raising for the next time, but we wont do quite as much, we would appreciate your help with this next time Thank you, im sure Terry(the organiser will be very grateful)

Thank you for your support

neil's wheels
I asked my regional manager about fundraising for this event as being in a wheelchair training with GKR it interested me very much. I was asked to go down to the event and teach. My CRB form is still 'in the pipeline' so that ruled out teaching at the event, i asked if the club could sponsor me to go and was told no 'we don't really do that' sorry i must have been on a different planet last year when people got sponsorship for the world cup' not bitter just annoyed.

Neil.

From the correspondance the kids and i have had with Shihan, i can tell you that shihan feels the same, and was incredibly polite and curteous to us, as i expected from a man of his stature.

Sadly the fact remains for whatever reason(yes im being very diplomatic laugh.gif ), despite being given at least a years notice, no help was forthcoming this time, and it does stick in my throat, that people can raise funds to enter a karate comp, but as i dont know the details of GKR help in this matter it is not for me to pass comment on.

I can say it has damaged how the kids feel about GKR, they feel very let down, and no amount of nice speak will change that.

Looking at the positives, its another great lesson in life wink.gif

We wont dwell on the past, but look forward to the future, the event will go ahead, and it will be a fantastic day for all involved. tongue.gif
