Birmingham UGS
The third United Goju Seminar, which is quickly becoming 'the must attend event' for Goju practitioners and those with an interest in Goju is to be held in Birmingham on the 22nd and 23rd October.
The United Goju Seminars (UGS), for those that do not know, is a gathering of various high calibre instructors from different branches of Goju schools. Rather than trying to unify the style to create a super association of clones, the UGS celebrates the differences within Goju, it offers the opportunity to see different (or perhaps similar) interpretations of what you do. Despite the event being the exploration of Goju karate it will prove to be of interest to any serious martial artist as we all share common origins, so which ever style you practice, you are welcome to attend.
For the Birmingham United Goju Seminar (BUGS) we have a monumental line up of instructors, making this possibly the most prestigious UGS event to date. Instructors for Saturday 22nd October include Tony Christian 7th dan, Harry Cook 7th dan, Chris Rowen 6th dan and Paul Coleman 6th dan, for Sunday we have Geoff Pearce 6th dan and Dan Lewis 5th dan, on the agenda we have Hakatsuru te, Ko jitsu, naihanchi, Goju sparring techniques and more. An exciting line up and schedule, guaranteeing a very memorable weekend.
UGS is a non profit event and all instructors take part for the love of their art, on a completely voluntary basis. This, besides being very honourable, allows us to keep the cost of the seminar down; for the Saturday and the Sunday the cost is just £30, for Saturday only £25 and Sunday only £15. BUGS will be held at Birmingham Sports Centre, Balsall Heath Road, Highgate, Birmingham B12 9DL, registration for both days is between 9-10am and will continue onto approximately 17.00 o'clock on Saturday and 14.30 on Sunday. Please visit www.ugs2005.com for more details or feel free to contact the organisor, Terry Brown, on 07947 653860 or email terry@ugs2005.com

So, is anyone in the UK thinking of going?
I'll be there, but don't let that put you off.

I'm quite looking forward to it! I've been abit disillusioned with my karate recently, due to having to work strange hours and missing too many classes.
I'm hoping this will help me get back into training, as well as giving me an insight into another style of karate.

Hi Wombat
I reckon you will come away from ugs totally pumped, thats why I love seminars they get you going so much. I would really love to go to something like that.
Maybe we could try and organise something like that in Australia, is there anyone else out there keen? Lets just do it. It doesnt have to be just Goju we could incorporate any style and run a super seminar that goes all weekend. I'm sure that some of the more senior grades out there like Boz and Mike Flanagan etc would like to get involved and I have a few really good contacts that would love to do something like that. I'm getting pumped just thinking about it, come on who wants to do it?

P.S. Wombat you will have to let us know how they run the ugs, so that we can steal some ideas.

Sounds great, especially if you're going to pay my air fare from England.
Living in hope,

Well folks - I quite enjoyed it!
First up was Geoff Pearce. We did various combinations on the theme of upper, middle and lower blocks, and how to correctly move between the three. This involved partner work - for which I'm grateful to MarkP for. These were actually quite tricky - but maybe that was because I was a total newcomer to the style.
Next up we did kata Tenchi Meibukan. I don't think anyone had done this kata before. I can't really describe it - seemed a cross between Bassai Dai and Seiunchin. I did like it though. I'd like to have a proper go at it. One hour isn't enough really.
Next was Dan Lewis. We did partner work involving various goju strikes. These included grappling techniques and pressure point work. I found this really instructive - next time I really want to hurt someone - I'll know where to grab!
Dan wasn't reallyat his best though, he was recovering from a back injury.
Last up was Robert Agar Hutton. This chap is a true one off, a total eccentric. We focused on body movement and awareness. I think this was based on Tai Chi.
One exercise was to choose a kata you liked, and run through the first two or three moves - but really slowly. I chose Saifa - bad choice!
Another exercise was working as part of a three man team. One person would assume a "ready" position, and the other two would move to attack him/her. The drawback being that the attackee would have his or her eyes closed and would have to listen and feel for their foe. The attackee would also have to incorporate a finishing move into their defence, such as a takedown or throw. This worked surprisingly well.
For an end demonstation - two chaps came up and asked for volenteers to help invent a two-handed grappling kata, consisting of seven moves. This worked quite well - and was a credit to the guys doing it.
All in all, a very interesting and educative day! Was good to meet the guys from the UK forum - and was equally good to have been allowed an insight into another style of Karate.
Well worth it.
