I was at the same NAS as Goyle and i agree with her the Red Embroidery looked best. However if you look through MA magazines etc 9 out of 10 are gold/ yellow.
In my style we have 10 odd Black Belts where i train and 5 are plain, 3 have yellow and 2 have red. It seems to be we can pick any 'traditional' colour.
I have thought about Red but give me your idea's

LOL! Talk about stirrer! Honestly, with pink on that list, would anyone expect me to choose any different?

But, alas.... somehow, I think I would probably go with the more traditional gold.

You were at the NAS? Competing or spectatoring? Why didn't you come and say hello? Grrr... men!

I like silevr and black, I'd like the idea of red but it'd have to be a good colour red, and that can be a little hard to get. Bright cherry red? Maybe not but a darker burgundy kind of colour maybe.

I was just watching i knew a few guys in the BB and i want to get back into some competition however i couldnt compete in the States as i hadnt qualified ie competed in the rounds. So hopefully next year i think the first round is Feb 19th?
I found Goyle which i though wasnt bad considering i only had wedding photos to go on.
She said you had just left. Which is bad form considering the BB men had just started?
I also met Skye Rachel

I think a really subtle black embroidery might be nice, and quite classy.

Black on Black.
Very subtle. Only you would know.
A variation on that could be to have a light silver flek on the black embroidery so that it was only visible in certain lights.

Yes, that would be really nice too. Nothing too ostentatious.

Our ju jitsu sensei, has white on his belt, and it stands out a lot and i think looks nice.
Our Tang soo do sensei has silver because the club is called the silver dragons, this looks nice too.
a friend has yellow or gold, im not so keen on that myself.
I have seen red as well, it does stand out a lot.
I HAVE DECIDED WHITE IS BEST FOR ME should i ever get to that position.

GKR's position is that only yellow/gold embroidery be allowed on its dan ranked black belts. It was established about 5 (guess from memory) or so years ago.
However, I have one with gold and one with deep orange.

Yeah but you would need to be careful with it that it didn't get dirty....
If I ever get to that position, I would prefer gold embroidery on my belt

Thats true Mel, but i would clean my belt, not wash it but clean it, although i think all this stuff about not washing belts etc is poo.I like tradition, but times move on, and with some things we need to change tradition and maybe create our own, i think wrapping a dirty smelly belt around your waist is disgusting personally.

I just I just finished reading this article on Matb's site and I'm impressed by the research that went into it.
www.gkrkarate.org/pages/provo/beltname.html
And I thought that this brought up a whole new Issue: I can't actually spell my name in Japanese! Several sounds are unavailable such as 'bra-' and 'ley'
I have enough trouble spelling my name in english...what comes after 'b'?
Persoanlly I'd oft for a bronze thread, and I'd take great pains to have something embroidere which I would appreciate most, maybe not my name at all.
Maybe: "Kiss me I'm a Black Belt!"
It's late...

Interesting article, and whilst I agree with his point that 'who the heck really cares' I see he's dragged this old chestnut up again:

It's an irony that a black belt used to show experience because it was an unwashed white belt that had been used for so long that it had become black with dirt

Thread revival.........
I was at the first Senior training class for this year tonight and one of the shodan students was wearing a new belt... one that the RM had pointed out as "being new"...
When looking over to his belt i noticed it was embroidered in red (well it looked pink to me).
Now when i got the chance i said to him "i thought you could only have gold embroidery on your belt" to which he replied "Kancho said he liked it when he saw it at the world cup"
SO.... there you go... red is allowed (well pink is allowed anyway)... i wonder what other colours are allowed within the system...
Any colour that Kancho takes a fancy to apparently.......
I'm with Angela and Havok on this one. Black embroidery. After all, it;s your belt, you've earned it - you should be allowed to have whatever colour thread you like.

Saying that, I actually have gold embroidery on my belt (proper gold, not the orangey yellow stuf), but then again it was a present for me, and it is lovely anyway.
