Hi folks
If this question has been asked I apologise in advance rolleyes.gif I wonder if anyone can help smile.gif
The part where there are 3 Quick Gedan barai.
I wondered if anyone knows the reason for this move and its practical application.
I was wondering if it was more a ceremonial move rather than a practical one?
Has anybody got any thoughts? Some insight would be great thumb.gif
I tryed asking this question in an ....Errrrmmm.... Other GKR forum last week but as yet No one has replyed at all dunno.gif so any infomation will be greatfuly recieved thanks

You will probably find onoe of the GKR supplied applications is that you arent in fact doing gedan barais, but are striking someones who has hold of your shoulders releasing their grip....

doable? i have no idea, never really thought about it or tried it... Bassai Dai has never really been of much interest to me (probably cos it was over trained in class i have no patience for it)

Best people to ask would be "boz", Mick, or Mike...
Maybe even rocket could give us a different point of view if the kata is familiar to him...

Hope that at least get's you thinking away from the blocking movement and more towards other applications...
Matt
When I started trying to learn more about bunkai/oyo, a good piece of advice I got was that what appears to be a block is more often than not not in fact a block.

Make sense? ??
No?? Ah - welcome to the world of kata biggrin.gif

I rather like that one, it gives me a laugh every time I hear it. lol.gif Just the thought of someone being grabbed by the shoulders and responding by punching the attacker's hands, whereupon said attacker might say "#$%^&*er!" and headbutt them in the face or kick them in the tender parts. lol.gif

That part does need to be looked at in the context of the preceding moves, but if you've only done GKR then that's probably not gonna help you.

Mick, what would be an alternative to this? I`m learning this kata for my next grade - and would appreciate knowing some of the meaning behind it.
Matt
Its an arm bar/lock....

You mean there are GKR supplied applications????? I am truly shocked. I asked the RM about this one a while back and was told that there was no 'official' GKR bunkai and that I shouldn't ask him Bunkai questions..........

Dandino I think the reasons you haven't got any real answers are because there aren't any.
Susan
yes. there are gkr supplied applications, but as you can see they dont usually make sense or work in any given situation...

Hi Susan,
Your Kung Fu training should enable you to see how kata work, yes?

Boz
Susan
yes boz it does... but our forms are very different to any kata in karate i have seen...
we are taught one application and practise it with partners while we learn the form.... as we grade higher in the system we are taught other things...

some of these applications we learn show some similarities to parts of kata i have learned... one application i've been working on in my level is an exact application from kata seiunchin... very helpful in seeing what you could do...

Im afraid though that with a lack of time my kung fu training has been suffering so my answer to that question is limited as i have not been getting in the training that i require... maybe when i find more of an understanding i could re answer this question... im afraid im still in the fairly beginner levels...

Hi

I have been taught the 3 short gedan barai as a particularly nasty neck break. (although not sure there's such a thing as a nice neck break laugh.gif ). One would already have hold of their neck, after slamming an elbow into it wink.gif
