Wow cheers Sionnagh i want expectin info that good well i mite check out some goju-ryu but my gkr instructor told me if i started another one then my gkr would be effected so im not sure if i should wait till i reach a higher grade then go goju-ryu or go soonish coz i do really like gkr because its a great place to meet new ppl and stuff

i dunno

well, since GKR is supposed to be a Go-Ju offspring you'd probably find it does your GKR training a lot of good...

Jul 20 2005, 10:46 PM
interesting!
maybe i will look at it then and another question is shotokan another style of karate?
Susan
Jul 20 2005, 10:48 PM
yes it is...
also a parent of GKR so maybe check that one out too...

KK I think maybe your instructor meant that your GKR would be effected because you'd probably find yourself being taught by a dan grade instructor with far more knowledge and experience than is available in GKR. People who have tried out other clubs do not have a good track record with their GKR training... they tend to find out how much they've been missing out on learning and change clubs.

Styles is a poor term, systems would be better since karate is a style of MA. You don't often hear people ask "what style?" of practitioners of other MAs.
In any case Goju-Ryu and Shotokan-Ryu are two of the major Japanese 'styles' of karate. The other two are Wado-Ryu and Shito-Ryu. There is also an Okinawan Goju-Ryu, as well as others like To'on Ryu, Shorin Ryu, Uechi Ryu, Ryuei Ryu...

^What Mick said. GKR RMs don't like people cross training because they might find that they're missing out on something with GKR.
To each their own but you have to make an informed decision. You can only do this by checking out what's on offer.

hi there, this is my first time on here just a quick message to karatekid.
There is heaps of really great clubs around, your gkr instructor will discourage you from training with other clubs because you may find out the truth. I teach goju karate under Tino Ceberano Hanshi in Perth we have an open door policy where anyone without an ego can come and train, we also encourage our students to open their minds and go and have a look at other clubs. chances are you will learn something. YOu can train with me any time, I will give you 5 weeks of free training. We have nothing to hide.

thanks for your message matt. I have a background in shotokan, rhee tae kwon do gkr and now international goju karate where I intend to stay. Something that I have learnt over the years is if you want to learn something properly you should always go to the source. While training and door knocking for gkr I was loving the karate, the business side sucked though. I felt the exchange was way out with the instructors and the members for that matter. everyone was creating this great club for free while somebody was flying around in his helicopter buying new boats.I noticed though that he used to always rave about tino ceberano, so I thought well if Im enjoying this karate how much am I going to enjoy this ceberano guys karate. So I tried to contact him, but found out he was living in the phillipines so contacted his son instead Shihan paul ceberano, to cut a long story short I am now best mates with paul ceberano and tino treats me like one of his own sons. by the way I have organized for him to come over again for another seminar it is open to all styles and i personally invite you all to come the cost is $65 it will be on saturday the 14th of august at 1pm at south perth primary school bookings are essential so let me know if your keen. see ya.

C'mon Jess. At least you're on the same continent!
I missed the Last Seminar due to holidaying in Sydney at the time - and sadly I'm gonna miss this one aswell

Would he consider doing a seminar here in the UK?

Tino lives in brisbane now, if you are there I can hook you up with one of the I.G.K. dojos there, then there is a fair chance you would eventually get to train with him.
He loves to travel and often does travel overseas you never know your luck he may end up in Birmingham one day. Last year he did a tour of Canada, America and Hawaii, if you get enough people together to make it worth his while he might consider it.
To get him to perth I just organise a couple of seminars for him along with accomadation book his flights and fishing trip and over he comes, he loves it.
