I know that in the case Duncan wrote about, any of these self defence methods would have been useless (since the attacker was completely barbaric), but I thought that some of you might find these somewhat useful.

Some Self Defence Techniques

We just don't seem to cover enough self defence methods in our karate class.

NB: I haven't been able to make the videos work on my computer (you may have more luck than I did), but the still pictures aren't too hard to follow.

thanks for that agent 99.
im sure everyone has found them useful.

with self defence, the methods you are taught must be practiced often to allow your body and your muscles (even your brain) to react instinctively. If you are shown a self defence move and you think it is useful try to practice it with your siblings, friends, parents, partners, whoever.

if you dont practice it and the need to use it does arise you dont want to think "hang on a minute there was a way of getting out of this head lock... if i just put my foot behind his leg and push against his chest or neck with my arm he should fall over backwards and i can get away"

by now you could be in a lot of trouble.

so yes, self defence should be covered a lot more in karate classes and we try to cover them at least one out of every 4 classes (i know we've been pretty slack in that department lately), but if your sensei doesnt do them often, take the initiative to ask him/her a few techniques after class and practice them often...

I would like to add to that...

Practice the ones which seem to come the most naturally.

If it is too complex or takes too long to get it, however good it might look or seem, you don't want to be stuck trying to think what to do.

The ones which are quick and easy and "duh that's so simple, how come I never thought of that" are the best IMSNSHO.

IMSNSHO = In My Sometimes Not So Humble Opinion.

Do you have any idea how long it has taken anyone to query that one? Months!!

Like I tell my class, there are no stupid questions - just stupid answers.
